7 of Sydney’s Best Beaches

For travellers and locals alike, Sydney has a range of beaches you can visit and enjoy. Knowing which one to visit can be a challenging task. There’s the popular and touristy beaches such as Bondi and Manly, or more secluded areas like Milk Beach to explore.

We’ve rounded up 7 of Sydney’s best beaches to help you plan your next trip or inspire your weekend adventures:

Bondi Beach

Iconic Bondi Beach is high on the visiting list for many people, especially tourists from within Australia and overseas. It’s one of Australia’s most well-known beaches so it gets busy here but it’s still well worth a trip, especially if you’ve never been before. Find a patch of sand to relax on here or enjoy a surf and swim in safety at any time of the year – this beach is patrolled year-round which is perfect for family swimming.

There are often special events on here so make sure you do some research before you visit. There’s also plenty of places to eat and drink if you’d rather watch the action from a little further afield or you need to refuel after your beach session.

Manly Beach

Manly Beach is another of Sydney’s beaches which is well-known around the world – mainly due to its history as the location of the first world surfing competition in 1964. Part of the Northern Beaches, Manly obviously has great surfing conditions but it is also the perfect place to enjoy a dip in the ocean. Not only can you swim and surf here but you can also try your hand at snorkelling and scuba diving. If you’d rather stay firmly on dry land you can walk or cycle around the area and take in the views.

Palm Beach

Location in Sydney’s Northern Beaches area, Palm Beach is not only scenic but is also heavily featured in the long-running soap series Home and Away. You can take a tour to see the filming locations of this popular TV show, or just enjoy the beautiful location itself. Pack a picnic and find a cosy spot or enjoy a nice meal with a view at Boathouse Palm Beach. There’s 2.3km of beach here to choose from with some areas offering great surfing conditions and other providing a protected place to swim. There’s also a market held here on the fourth Sunday of each month.

Balmoral Beach

Balmoral Beach is the perfect spot to visit if you want to relax and admire the setting.  There’s plenty of grassy space beside the beach if you feel like a sand-free picnic or you can hire some equipment and head out for a paddle. The beach isn’t patrolled here but conditions are usually quite calm and there’s also a rockpool the kids can check out. There’s plenty of options around for food and drink if you don’t bring your own and lots to explore if you feel like going for a walk.

Coogee Beach

Coogee Beach is another great family-friendly location. There’s plenty of restaurants and boutiques to check out as well as all the facilities you’ll need. There’s a children’s playground and an ocean pool that’s perfect for swimming some laps.  Coogee Beach is Stop 1 on the Bondi to Coogee Walk which is one of Sydney’s most popular coastal walks offering 6km of trial along the coastline. It’s also home to McIvers Baths, Australia’s last remaining women-only seawater pool which was established in 1886.

Tamarama Beach

Tamarama Beach is situated close to Bondi and Coogee and is well-known for the glamorous people who like to hang out there. You can join them for a swim or surf at the popular left-hand reef break. The surfing conditions are great here but it’s prone to strong currents so take care when swimming. Tamarama Beach is less touristy than Bondi but has plenty of charm and a nice local feel to it. There’s plenty of parklands surrounding the beach to explore with amenities to suit families as well. It’s one of the stops of the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk too.

Milk Beach

Milk Beach, known for it’s famous New Years Day parties, is considered one of Sydney’s secret beaches. This is a stunningly beautiful small stretch of beach located in Sydney’s East, within the Sydney Harbour National Park. It’s the ultimate spot for a family picnic or vantage point to watch fireworks over the harbour. It’s also ideal if you’d rather avoid the other ore crowded, touristy beaches like Bondi. What could be better than hanging out on the beach while admiring the amazing city views?
